How Did Bisexuality Awareness Day Originate?

A principios de la década de 1990 comenzaron a formarse diversas organizaciones bisexuales, especialmente en Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, el día internacional fue instaurado en 1999 en la conferencia anual de la Asociación Internacional de Lesbianas, Gays, Bisexuales, Trans e Intersex (ILGA), gracias a la iniciativa de tres activistas bisex: Wendy Curry, Michael Page y Gigi Raven Wilbur.

Se eligió la fecha porque el 23 de septiembre nació Freddie Mercury, un cantante al que los activistas admiraban y que les parecía visibilizar la bisexualidad con mucha fuerza. Además, ese día era el cumpleaños de Gigi Raven Wilbur.

Sin embargo, Wilbur afirmó que aún falta un largo camino por recorrer para que se reconozca a la comunidad bisexual.

“Desde la rebelión de Stonewall, la comunidad gay y lesbiana ha ganado fuerza y ​​visibilidad. La comunidad bisexual también se ha fortalecido, pero en muchos sentidos seguimos siendo invisibles. También he sido condicionado por la sociedad a etiquetar automáticamente a una pareja que camina de la mano como heterosexual o gay, dependiendo del género que percibo en cada persona”, explicó a ILGA.

 

Mitos sobre la comunidad bisexual

Es solo una fase o etapa

Es cierto que algunas personas gays o lesbianas pueden pasar por un periodo de transición hacia su orientación sexual, pero ésta no es la regla: no ocurre en todos los casos. La bisexualidad no debe ser anulada y no confundida con la curiosidad sexual que cualquier persona puede tener en algún momento de su vida.

 

Las personas bisexuales son lesbianas o gays con miedo a aceptar su homosexualidad.

Dentro de la comunidad LGBTIQ, muchas personas bisexuales viven situaciones de discriminación, ya que se cree que están confundidas o no quieren revelar su orientación sexual. Sin embargo, pueden sentir atracción hacia su género y hacia otros, y no siempre será en el mismo porcentaje para cada uno, ya que en algunos casos la atracción fluctúa en el tiempo.

 

La persona bisexual deja de serlo si tiene una relación con una persona del sexo opuesto

Este estereotipo bifóbico tiene sus raíces en la idea de que la bisexualidad es una etapa de experimentación antes de volver a la heterosexualidad. Sin embargo, es posible mantener una relación con el sexo opuesto y cada uno mantener una orientación sexual diferente.

Hay ocasiones en las que las personas deciden guardar silencio sobre su bisexualidad cuando están en una relación heterosexual por miedo a la discriminación o rechazo que puedan sufrir si sus parejas o familiares conocen su orientación sexual.

 

 

¿Por qué la bisexualidad merece ser respetada?

La bisexualidad es una orientación sexual igual de válida que las demás. No es una etapa ni representa confusión y cada uno la vive de manera única. Es importante que se derriben estos estereotipos para que se reconozcan sus derechos y se anime a más personas a expresarse sin miedo.
