Tausende von Homosexuellen und Transgender-Personen wurden öffentlich erniedrigt, sexuell belästigt, entlassen, inhaftiert oder in psychiatrische Krankenhäuser eingewiesen.
Das Stonewall Inn befindet sich in der Christopher Street 51 und 53 im Stadtteil Greenwich Village und war die einzige Bar, die trans Menschen akzeptierte.
Während der Razzien identifizierten sich die Transfrauen mit ihren Militärkarten und mussten mindestens drei Männerkleidungsstücke tragen, um einer Festnahme zu entgehen.
Am Tag der Unruhen betraten vier Polizisten die Bar durch die Haupttür, schalteten die Musik aus, schlossen die Türen und benutzten das Telefon, um nach weiteren Verstärkungen zu fragen.
Arbeiter und Barbesucher wurden festgenommen, während mehr Menschen drinnen und draußen von der Polizei heftig angegriffen wurden.
Während der ungefähr 45 Minuten, die die Störung dauerte, warf eine Person einen Kraftstoffstrahl in die Bar und setzte sie in Brand, später kamen die Feuerwehrleute und löschten das Feuer.
"Sie haben 13 Personen festgenommen, andere landeten im Krankenhaus, vier Polizisten wurden verletzt und fast das gesamte Innere des Lokals wurde zerstört."
Sechs Monate nach dieser schrecklichen Tragödie wurden in New York zwei Aktivistenorganisationen gegründet, um Proteste durchzuführen und ihre Rechte zu fördern.
Der erste Jahrestag der Unruhen im Stonewall Inn wurde am 28. Juni 1970 gefeiert und wurde zur ersten LGBT + Pride-Parade in der Geschichte.
