How Stonewall Sparked a Revolution

El 28 de junio de 1969 en un pub conocido como Stonewall Inn ubicado en Nueva York, se llevó a cabo una redada por parte de la policía contra la comunidad LGBT+. Esto provocó manifestaciones masivas que se convirtieron en la primera lucha por los derechos de la comunidad LGBT+.

Entre 1950 y 1960 eran pocos los establecimientos que aceptaban personas abiertamente homosexuales, la mayoría eran bares.

Anteriormente, las redadas policiales en bares gay ya eran una rutina, pero en este caso excedieron por completo todos los límites.

Miles de homosexuales y personas transgénero fueron humillados públicamente, acosados ​​sexualmente, despedidos, encarcelados o internados en hospitales psiquiátricos.

El Stonewall Inn está ubicado en 51 y 53 Christopher Street en el barrio de Greenwich Village y era el único bar que aceptaba personas trans.

Durante los allanamientos las mujeres trans se identificaron con sus carnés militares y debieron vestir un mínimo de tres prendas masculinas para evitar ser detenidas.

El día de los disturbios, cuatro policías entraron al bar por la puerta principal, apagaron la música, cerraron las puertas y utilizaron el teléfono para pedir más refuerzos.

Los trabajadores y los clientes del bar fueron arrestados mientras más personas dentro y fuera eran duramente agredidas por la policía.

Durante los 45 minutos que duró aproximadamente el disturbio, una persona arrojó un chorro de combustible al bar y le prendió fuego, posteriormente llegaron los bomberos y apagaron el fuego.

Detuvieron a 13 personas, otras acabaron en el hospital, cuatro policías resultaron heridos y casi todo el interior del establecimiento quedó destruido.

Seis meses después de esta terrible tragedia, se crearon dos organizaciones activistas en Nueva York para realizar protestas y promover sus derechos.

El primer aniversario de los disturbios de Stonewall Inn se celebró el 28 de junio de 1970, convirtiéndose en la primera marcha del orgullo LGBT+ de la historia.

El 24 de junio de 2016, el expresidente estadounidense Barack Obama declaró el bar Stonewall Inn como el primer monumento nacional que conmemora la historia de la lucha por los derechos de la comunidad LGBT+.

Hoy se cumplen 50 años de aquellos disturbios ocurridos en Nueva York, sin embargo después de tantos años aún quedan muchas más cosas por hacer para erradicar la violencia contra la comunidad LGBT+.
