How Did Bisexuality Awareness Day Originate?

Au début des années 1990, diverses organisations bisexuelles ont commencé à se former, notamment aux États-Unis. Cependant, la journée internationale a été établie en 1999 lors de la conférence annuelle de l'Association internationale des lesbiennes, gays, bisexuels, trans et intersexes (ILGA), grâce à l'initiative de trois activistes bisexuels : Wendy Curry, Michael Page et Gigi Raven Wilbur.

La date a été choisie parce que le 23 septembre, Freddie Mercury est né, un chanteur que les activistes admiraient et qui leur semblait rendre la bisexualité visible avec une grande force. De plus, ce jour-là était l'anniversaire de Gigi Raven Wilbur.

Cependant, Wilbur a déclaré qu'il reste encore un long chemin à parcourir avant que la communauté bisexuelle ne soit reconnue.

« Depuis la rébellion de Stonewall, la communauté gay et lesbienne a gagné en force et en visibilité. La communauté bisexuelle a également gagné en force, mais à bien des égards, nous restons invisibles. J'ai également été conditionné par la société à étiqueter automatiquement un couple qui se tient la main comme hétérosexuel ou gay, en fonction du genre que je perçois chez chaque personne », a-t-il expliqué à ILGA.

 

Mythes sur la communauté bisexuelle

C'est juste une phase ou un stade.

Il est vrai que certaines personnes gays ou lesbiennes peuvent traverser une période de transition vers leur orientation sexuelle, mais ce n'est pas la règle : cela ne se produit pas dans tous les cas. La bisexualité ne doit pas être ignorée et ne doit pas être confondue avec la curiosité sexuelle que n'importe qui peut avoir à un moment de sa vie.

 

Les personnes bisexuelles sont des lesbiennes ou des gays ayant peur d'accepter leur homosexualité.

Au sein de la communauté LGBTIQ, de nombreuses personnes bisexuelles vivent des situations de discrimination, car on pense qu'elles sont confuses ou qu'elles ne veulent pas révéler leur orientation sexuelle. Cependant, elles peuvent ressentir une attirance envers leur genre et d'autres, et cela ne sera pas toujours dans le même pourcentage pour chacun, car dans certains cas, l'attirance fluctue au fil du temps.

 

La personne bisexuelle cesse d'être bisexuelle si elle a une relation avec une personne de sexe opposé.

Ce stéréotype biphobe est ancré dans l'idée que la bisexualité est une étape d'expérimentation avant de revenir à l'hétérosexualité. Cependant, il est possible de maintenir une relation avec le sexe opposé tout en ayant chacun une orientation sexuelle différente.

Il y a des moments où les gens décident de garder le silence sur leur bisexualité lorsqu'ils sont dans une relation hétérosexuelle, par crainte de discrimination ou de rejet qu'ils pourraient subir si leurs partenaires ou leur famille connaissaient leur orientation sexuelle.

 

 

Pourquoi la bisexualité mérite-t-elle d'être respectée ?

La bisexualité est une orientation sexuelle tout aussi valide que les autres. Ce n'est pas une étape ni une représentation de confusion et chacun la vit de manière unique. Il est important que ces stéréotypes soient démolis afin que leurs droits soient reconnus et que davantage de personnes soient encouragées à s'exprimer sans crainte.
