What are Water Resistance Ratings?

To explain what waterproof sex toys are, we need to cover the basics. Specifically, let’s take a look at the different water-resistance ratings and what they mean.

Put simply, the water resistance of a sex toy refers to how much protection there is from liquids getting to its electronic parts, such as batteries and motors.

Water resistance is expressed on a scale from 0 to 9, where 0 means no protection and 9 refers to maximum protection.

Without getting into the finer details, this rating (officially called the ingress protection or IP rating) comes from the International Electrochemical Commission.

Water-resistance (IPX) Ratings for Sex Toys

The full IP rating of a sex toy (or other electronic device) is expressed as two numbers. The first digit refers to how much protection there is against liquids getting to its electronic components. The second digit refers to the solid objects and dust we mentioned earlier. If one of those digits is not provided, it’s simply replaced with an ‘X’.

The most important rating for sex toys is water-repellency. To save you from working through all the technical jargon, we’ve prepared this convenient summary.

Most SVAKOM sex toys are rated IPX4 splashproof, IPX6 water-resistant, or IPX7 waterproof and submersible. It’s important to note that some parts of SVAKOM toys are rated IPX0, such as masturbator cases and remote controls.

How to use Waterproof, Water-resistant, and Splashproof Sex Toys

Step 1: Do a safety check

Re-read the packaging and/or user manual for your sex toy to check its water-resistance rating as this will affect how you can use it in or near water.

Generally, SVAKOM splashproof sex toys can handle the occasional splash of water but we recommend saving them for use in dry settings.

Water-resistant sex toys are protected against powerful water jets (excluding spa baths). However, it’s best to err on the side of caution and use them in dry scenarios – you’ll avoid the risk of accidentally submerging in water as you get caught up in the excitement of your wet and wild action.

When it comes to aquatic sessions, the best sex toys are waterproof as they can be submerged in water up to 1 meter for around 30 minutes. For particular sex toys, you may need to secure entry points to the motor, battery compartment or charging port – think dust covers and twisting caps or bases – as directed in your user manual. 

Step 2: Get lubricant

Use a high-quality lubricant to enhance glide and reduce friction between your body and the sex toy. 

Remember that water-based lubricant is the only type compatible with silicone sex toys, but it will come off quickly in the bath or shower. Never use silicone-based lubricant or other non-water-based substances, including gels, lotions, and moisturizers, with silicone sex toys as this can damage the materials. 

If inserting your sex toy while in the bath or shower, you may want to try applying water-based lubricant inside your vagina or anus instead of to your pleasure product. If you use your sex toy on external hot spots, you could go for a long-lasting or thick water-based formulation of lubricant.

Step 3: Pursue pleasure

How to Clean Splashproof, Water-resistant, and Waterproof Sex Toys

Just because you’ve used your sex toy in water, doesn’t mean it’s clean!

Splashproof sex toys

Apply toy cleaner to the surface of your sex toy, avoiding the charging points and other electronic components. Leave for up to 60 seconds, or as recommended in the toy cleaner directions. Then, wipe off with a clean lint-free towel or soft cloth and allow your sex toy to air dry completely. 

Water-resistant sex toys

Water-resistant sex toys do have more protection against liquids than splashproof ones, but you still need to take care. After, water-resistant is not the same as waterproof.

So, apply toy cleaner to the surface of your water-resistant sex toy, avoiding the charging points and other electronic components. Leave for up to 60 seconds, or as recommended in the toy cleaner directions. Then, wipe off any excess with a clean lint-free towel or soft cloth and let your sex toy air dry completely. 

Water-resistant Pulse stimulators
